Specialty walk-in centers are still an emerging trend
Alejandro Badia, M.D. discusses the chapter 8 of the book #HealthcareFromTheTrenches named “The Hospital System Behemoths and Bureaucracy.”
The move of orthopedic care away from the hospital to urgent care centers, and perhaps to specialized orthopedic urgent care has been demonstrated, although in somewhat lethargic fashion due to the behemoth size of the industry. We discussed it in the area of outpatient surgery centers and point of-access issues via the still growing urgent care phenomenon…”
Specialty walk-in centers are still an emerging trend, rarely discussed in the urgent care industry, yet I had published an op-ed article in our county, and later state, medical journal nearly a decade ago which went unheralded. Interestingly, a financial news website published my thoughts on this in early 2020, using OrthoNOW® as an example, illustrating that the impetus for change may come from the macroeconomics world. Notice it is not coming from the healthcare landscape, nor from physicians themselves. I continue to predict it will come from consumers… and COVID-19 may drive it.
